Unlike some methods of harvesting salt, Sal de Margarita is based on ancestral traditions using controlled salt ponds. The ocean is allowed to flood huge, flat, shallow, beds and then a dam is used to trap the water. The water then naturally evaporates as it is dried by the sun, leaving a layer of sea salt that is then harvested by hand.
Sal de Margarita has a multi-layered advantage over other salts for enhancing a margarita. To begin with Sal de Margarita has a crisp salty taste that complements the lime and the tequila ingredients while delivering a light crunch as it is sipped from the glass. Then also the texture of the coarse grains of the crystals make it ideal for crusting the rim of a margarita glass. The taste has a rustic, intense flavor making it ideal for crusting the rim of a margarita glass that quickly dissolves on the palate.
Sal de Margarita is packaged in a natural cotton muslin bag, hand-embroidered by the Sabinito women in a remote village of Sierra Madre, Occidental Mexico. Recognizing the women's artistic talent, Sal del Mar created an opportunity to empower the women of Sabinito by having them embroider the bags to package the salt. The partnership with the village women enables them to stay in the role of housewife and care for their children but still able to earn money to benefit their families. The underlying belief behind Sal del Mar is that helping each other helps make ours a better world. Purchasing Sal de Margarita benefits the local women who support their families from their traditional skills.
